Description
California flags are famous for their depiction of a grizzly bear walking on a patch of green grass above the words “California Republic.” The first version of this flag dates back to 1846 during the Bear Flag revolt against Mexico, which controlled California during that time. The California Republic existed briefly as an unrecognized state before the federal government of the United States claimed California. The current California flag was adopted in 1911.
Grizzly bears, admired for their strength, size and beauty, once roamed California in the thousands. But they were targeted, hunted by settlers and driven to extinction by the early 1900s, less than 75 years after the Gold Rush.
California flags keep the memory of the mighty grizzly bear alive as the emblem of the great State of California.
