Description
The Gadsden Don’t Tread On Me flag is one of the most famous American flags aside from the Stars & Stripes flag. The flag was created in 1775 during the Revolutionary War by Continental Colonel Christopher Gadsden and flew on the flagship of the Navy’s commander-in-chief. The flag features a coiled timber rattlesnake with 13 rattles representing the 13 American colonies. The snake rests on grass above the words “Don’t Tread On Me.” The rattlesnake had served as a symbol of the United States on other historic flags, such as the Culpeper flag and the first Navy jack. Like the bald eagle, the timber rattlesnake is uniquely American, which made it a fitting symbol of the Colonies as being distinct from England. In modern times, the Tea Party has embraced the Don’t Tread On Me flag, as have other groups supporting constitutionalism, libertarianism, and limited government
