Description
The New York City flag was adopted in 1915. The flag’s colors of blue, white and orange symbolize the colors of the historical Dutch flag. In the early 1600s, the Dutch originally established a settlement in what is now New York City. The settlement of New Amsterdam was centered in what is now Manhattan. The flag also depicts a Native American to symbolize the area’s first inhabitants. Also depicted is a seaman, representing colonizers. A bald eagle represents the United States. A windmill symbolizes the influence of the Dutch.
